Weyfest is coming back to Southfield this June! The festival first came about following Bob Hedlund’s 2015 mayoral campaign as he was consistent in his message that Weymouth’s town pride was in need of a “booster” shot.  This year the event will be on June 18.  While some activities at the festival charge a fee, Weyfest itself is free of charge to attend and there are many low or no cost activities to enjoy throughout the day.

Montilio’s will be the primary concessionaire and current menu items include Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Cheese/Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Grilled Sausage and Peppers, Pizza, French Fries, and Fried Dough.   Items currently on the menu are family friendly priced at $5 and under.  Other concession sales are offered to Weymouth civic groups, youth sports groups and school groups to be used as a fundraising opportunity and will be similarly priced.

The festival will begin with a torchbearer/lighting ceremony from where the first settlers of Wessagusett originally landed in 1622.  Citizens of distinction and merit will bring the torch throughout Weymouth with the final leg being run by Weymouth’s own Olympian, Tim Sweeney followed by the Weymouth Police Department.  Tim will then hand the torch off to Mayor Hedlund who will light the cauldron.  The torch will be arriving at Southfield at approximately 11 A.M. to open Weyfest.  Other activities include the Color Run (requires pre-registration and a race fee), Touch a Truck, a Weymouth Fire Department versus Weymouth Police Department whiffle ball tournament, and Olympic Day field events including sack races, an egg toss, a three legged race and many more.  There will be personality appearances from Tim Sweeney and stand-up comic and sports writer Jerry Thornton.  CBS morning meteorologist, Danielle Niles will not be able to make it to the event but there will be a raffle to try and win a lunch with her.  Tim, Jerry and Danielle all originate from Weymouth.   A 3 point basketball shooting contest, a cornhole tournament, a dunk tank, a k-9 demonstration and a mechanical bull will also be activities for all to do at the event.
