Event Spotlight-Great Strides & Muscle Walk This Weekend!

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides Walk in Easton

Great Strides & Muscle Walk

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides walk is coming to Easton, Massachusetts on May 21, 2016.  It will be held at Borderland State Park.  Check-in is at 10 A.M. and the walk begins at 11 A.M.  The walk is three miles in length.  There will also be children’s activities and food included in the event.  The goal for the walk is to raise $112,000 and $57,400 has been raised thus far.

Each year there are around five hundred locations throughout the nation that hold Great Strides walks.  Great Strides is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event with more than 125,000 people participating in walks across the country each year.  Proceeds will go to funding research and drug development so that those with Cystic Fibrosis receive individualized treatment and have access to high-quality, specialized care.

Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease which causes persistent lung infections, limiting the ability to breathe over time.  Both parents have to carry one defective Cystic Fibrosis gene in order for their child to have a chance of getting the disease.  Currently there are over 33,000 people in the United States with Cystic Fibrosis and there are around 1,000 new cases each year according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Patient Registry.

Great Strides & Muscle Walk

For all of those participating in the event, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation asks that you regularly clean your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand gel, cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow and that you stay a safe 6-foot distance away from anyone with a cold or infection.  Germs can be spread among people with Cystic Fibrosis through direct and indirect contact and also through drops that come from when a person coughs or sneezes and these travel short distances.  This can lead to worsening symptoms so to help reduce the risk of cross-infection, all people with Cystic Fibrosis should maintain a 6-foot distance from each other at all times when they are at this outdoor event.

Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Muscle Walk in Boston

Great Strides & Muscle Walk

Another walk that is coming up this weekend is the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Muscle Walk.  This event will be on May 22 at the Boston Common.  Registration opens at 10 A.M. with the program for the walk starting at 11 A.M. and the walk itself beginning at noon. Throughout the duration of the event there will be activities, informational booths, sponsors and vendors set up throughout the common.   The event typically ends by 1:30 P.M.

The route is the perimeter of the common with one lap being one mile in length.  There is an option for a 5K being several laps around the common.  If each teammate raises $100 or more, the team will receive t-shirts.  There are other prizes as well for the amount of money participants raise.  There is an underground parking garage at the Boston Common if you would like to drive in.  Public transportation is also available; you can take the green line, the red line or the silver line to get there.

Great Strides & Muscle Walk

The Perfect Crime Band will perform at the walk.  They are a 5-piece band with a selection of the vest music of the ‘60’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s.  After the walk all participants are invited to the “After Party” which will be hosted by The Glynn Group at Sterling’s from 1:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.  This event will include complimentary appetizers, a cash bar and great company.  Sterling’s is a short walk from the Boston Common so why stop walking after the walk ends?

Great Strides & Muscle Walk

Thus far the walk has raised over $101,000 of its $161,000 goal.  Funds raised from the event will help to find research breakthroughs across diseases, care for children and adults from day one and to provide services and support for families in hometowns across America.

Muscular dystrophy, ALS and other muscle-debilitating diseases impact a person’s physical strength and their independence therefore impeding their daily life.   The Muscular Dystrophy Association applies what they learn from one disease to other diseases helping to gain more insight into these diseases as a whole.
